Declared for conservation in 1938, Taman Negara has become Malaysia’s premier national park and the largest in the country, covering over 4,343 square kilometers (434,300 hectares) of primary forest. Spanning across the states of Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang, it is situated in the center of Peninsular Malaysia. Taman Negara is the most extensive protected area of pristine, lowland, evergreen rainforest in the nation. 

Its origins trace back to 1925 when the Pahang State Legislation designated over 1,300 square kilometers of tropical jungle in the Jerantut district as “The Gunung Tahan Game Reserve.” In 1938, this area became the National Park, named “King George V National Park” by the Sultans of Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan. After Malaysia’s independence, it was renamed “Taman Negara.” The park’s stated purpose is “to utilize the land within the park in perpetuity, for the propagation, protection, and preservation of indigenous flora and fauna.” With its rich biodiversity and countless activities, a trip to Taman Negara is a must on any itinerary.
